ANNOUNCING "ALL THAT GLITTERS" - SUGAR HIGH FRIDAY - NOVEMBER 2008

Light. You know it when you see it. Literally. For it is what we see during every waking moment of our lives, yet it is taken so for granted that we do not fully feel its presence until we feel its absence. Think, for a moment, of the memorable episodes of light that you have experienced. Was it a billion brilliant stars piercing the blue-black sky? The sunshine sheen of frozen pond waiting for you to carve your skates into it? Or was it the blazing burn of golden fire energizing a hearth? Focus, now, on what is in your direct line of vision. What do you see? The softest white diffusion spilled against a shaped shadow? The wake of frosted water smashing against a shoreline? Or is it the luminous and luscious temptations beckoning you from your local bakery or confectionery window? Did they grab your attention? Good. Keep it there.

For November, Sugar High Fridays, the crazy-popular and long-running event created by Jennifer, The Domestic Goddess, is celebrating every and any sweet that catches the eye, whether as mesmerizingly complicated as spun caramel filament crowning a cylinder of mousse parfait or as simple as holiday treats paved with sanding sugar. The only requirement is that your sweets must irresistibly razzle and dazzle.

Here are some ideas, though the possibilities are truly limitless:

  • Creations decorated with edible pearls or glitter, luster dust, gold or silver leaf, metallic dragĂ©es, sparkling sugars*

  • Mirror cake and other glazed or iced baked goods, candied fruit, nut brittles, hard candies, gumdrops

  • Glossy chocolates and ganaches, shimmering puddings, gelatins, ices

Create and post about a light-reflecting recipe by Monday, November 24, including links to this announcement as well as Jennifer's Sugar High Fridays post. Archived recipes can only be accepted if they are reposted as current.

Email your posts to me at thewellseasonedcook AT yahoo DOT com with SHF in the subject and provide the following details:

Name

Blog Name (those who do not blog are also welcome to join in – just email your recipes and photos)

Recipe Name and URL

Location (Optional)

Photo – 400 X 300, either orientation. I will resize if you have problems.

Use of the logo is optional.

The round-up will be posted late New York time on Friday, November 28. Given that the last week of November includes the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday, I might not be able to accommodate every latecomer. Please consider this when budgeting your time if you are keen to participate.

* Various decorations can be found in the baking aisle of your grocer, as well as cake, craft and chef supply stores. Some local restrictions (i.e. California) may apply to the purchase of metallic comestibles. Not all decorations are considered suitable for consumption, but will be labeled "For Decoration Only."

  2. Oh Susan, I just threw out years-old sparkling sugar and sugar flowers because I didn't see myself using them at all! At least they'd have qualified my dish for your event!
